HOW DO I FILE MY

EXTENSION?

Do you need more time to prepare your federal tax return?

This page provides information on how to apply for an extension of time to file.

Remember, there is no penalty for filing a late return after the tax deadline if a refund is due.

In other words, if you don’t owe taxes, you don’t have to file an extension.

Here are your options.

  • File online through the IRS
  • File by mail
  • Make an advanced IRS payment

    Efile with the IRS

Individual tax filers, regardless of income, can use Free File to electronically request an automatic tax-filing extension.

      Make a payment

If you owe taxes and make a full or partial payment online, you’ll get an automatic extension without having to file a separate extension form and you will receive a confirmation number for your records.

You can use Direct Pay, the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS), or a credit or debit card

      File by mail

You can download Form 4868 from the IRS website, fill it out, and mail it to the IRS along with a check or money order for your tax bill. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the IRS is way behind on its paper correspondence. So if you want a response from the IRS, you should really try to file electronically.
